Many students consider societies an integral part of their university experience. Priya, a UCL student, shares her thoughts on what the best parts of being part in a society and why every fresher should join the action.

Many students consider societies an integral part of their university experience. Priya, a UCL student, shares her thoughts on what the best parts of being part in a society and why every fresher should join the action.

You're considering going to university. What is university life like? Where will I fit in? Will I find friends?

It is easy to dismiss or ignore societies because they are too difficult or too overwhelming. You might think that all that extra time could have been spent studying for those exams. You're wrong!

I could go on about societies and the benefits they offer, but I will limit my talk to 10 reasons I think you should join one once you reach university.

1. Socializing - Societies can be a great way to meet people who are not on your degree program. Societies are a group of people with varying ages. You could meet someone from the same degree program as you, or expand your social circle. You will find people with similar interests and opinions in the society you choose. There are so many people you can choose from that you will find someone you like. Plus... Societies also have social events! From Nandos and Pizza, to Nights Out and Debates!

2. Enrichment: Your society will be run by students for student. It is an extremely enriching experience. You won't know if you like it until it is actually tried. Through the many activities offered by the society, you will experience personal growth as well as developing your character.

3. Networking - What are you thinking? It's true! It is possible to network, which can be a very valuable skill. You can network at societies through talks and events or with people in the society. Alumni are people who have graduated from university and are now employed. Make connections and you might be able to join them!

4. Brotherhood/Sisterhood – Being part of society (often during your degree program) will allow you to get to know other members of the group. They will share their successes, losses, and other experiences. Most of these people will be your friends for life.

5. Fun is key - It's not a good idea to work hard and have fun. Societies are fun and relieve stress. Join a society to achieve that balance.

6. This is your chance to represent your university or union. Yes! It will be so much fun to do something you love and it will be great with your friends!

7. Impact - You can make a difference - Contribute to society and actively change causes you care about.

8. Your prospects for employment after graduation are better - Studies show that students who participate and are active in society after completing their degree do better in finding graduate jobs. Employers look for skills such as organisation, communication, and the ability to manage a balanced curriculum.

9. Time management - It takes a lot of skill to manage your time and to juggle your degree lectures, reading further, coursework, and going to your chosen society. You don't have these skills? Don't worry! Most students don't do this...until they join an organization!

10. Create lasting memories - We can guarantee you will get out of joining society the memories you create. You will have fun, laugh out loud and share the good times.

If you want to avoid problems such as strokes and heart disease, there is an easy way.


Get more fruits and vegetables.

Whole grains are better than refined ones. Brown rice is better than white. Switch to whole-wheat pasta

Consider lean proteins such as poultry, fish and beans.

Reduce your intake of processed foods, sugar, salt, saturated fat, and other unhealthy food.

Flexibility is key to eating well, according to Joyce Meng, MD assistant professor at UConn Health's Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center. You can follow a strict diet plan if you prefer. It's okay if you don't like following a strict diet plan.


Tricia Montgomery (52), founder of K9 Fit Club knows firsthand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Her favorite things are eating healthy food and making small, frequent meals. She says, "I don’t deny myself anything." "I still enjoy dessert, key lime pie, yum!" -- I love frozen gummy bears and moderation is the key.


Get regular checkups. Your doctor will keep track of your medical history so that you can stay healthy. If you are at high risk of osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones), your doctor may recommend more vitamin D and calcium.


You may be recommended by your doctor to have screening tests done to monitor your health and detect conditions before they become serious.


Be open to communication. Meng said, "If you have any questions, ask your doctor." "Ensure you are satisfied with the information." Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any medication or procedure.


Reduce Stress

It can be very detrimental to your health. It is impossible to avoid it all, but there are ways you can reduce the effects. Do not take on too many responsibilities. Set limits for yourself and others. It is okay to say no.


To relieve stress, try:


Deep breathing

Meditation

Yoga

Massage

Exercise

Healthy eating

Talking to a friend or family member.

Develop healthy habits

You can prevent problems from coming your way tomorrow if you make the right decisions today.


Brush your teeth twice daily and floss each day.

Don't smoke.

Limit your alcohol. Limit your alcohol intake to 1 drink per day.

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Get better sleep. Try to sleep for at least 8 hours. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.

Keep out of direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Wear your seatbelt.

Meng suggests that you take time each day to invest in your own health.


Montgomery was able to see the benefits. Montgomery says that she has overcome health issues, is happy, and has a positive outlook. She says that her life has been forever transformed.
